OSCARS 2014: U2 HONORS MANDELA WITH 'ORDINARY LOVE' PERFORMANCE

Bono and U2 gave an emotional performance during the Academy Awards where they sang the original song, "Ordinary Love," from the Weinstein company biopic, "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. " Presented by Brad Pitt, The Irish rock band performed the Oscar nominee song live for the first time. This is the band's second Oscar nomination since 2003 for "The Hands That Built America" from the 2002 film "Gangs of New York" and their latest song in three years.

During the performance, a slideshow of pictures of the late Nelson Mandela appeared in the background honoring the band's personal friend. "Ordinary Love" was released November 21, less than a week before Nelson Mandela passed away.Harvey Weinstein personally asked the band to write the original score for the film.

U2's performance followed an upbeat, celebrity-shimmy performance by Pharrell Williams and his Oscar nominee score for "Happy" and a somber performance by Karen O for "The Moon Song." Idina Menzel's also is set to sing "Frozen'"s "Let It Go." Pink and first-time Oscar performer Bette Midler also hit the stage during the awards show.
